On 12 July in Seoul, RTU Deputy Rector for International Academic Cooperation and Studies Professor Igors Tipāns participated in a solemn ceremony attended by the representatives of the government of the Republic of Korea.

At the ceremony, Professor Tipāns received a nomination document, which attests that Riga Technical University is the representative of the King Sejong Institute in Latvia, and it will administer the work of a new institution «Riga King Sejong Institute.» The institute will deal with popularisation of the Korean language and culture in Latvia. The institute will operate in the premises of International Cooperation Centre of RTU FSD at Kronvalda Boulevard 1, Riga.
Since September 2016, the institute will offer RTU students, employees and other interested parties the courses of the Korean language providing the insights into Korean culture and traditions, technology development and art. Latvia can learn a lot from the Republic of Korea, especially rapid development of technologies that is largely attributable to excellent engineering education.
RTU has established academic and research cooperation with numerous highly ranked Korean universities, there is a common interest to facilitate collaboration in these spheres. It was attested during the recent visit of RTU Rector, academician Leonīds Ribickis, to the Republic of Korea, where he participated in negotiations with the representatives of university administration of several Korean universities. There is a growing interest among RTU and other Latvian university students to participate in exchange programs with Korean universities, however, in order to successfully participate in such programs, students need at least some knowledge of the Korean language. Even the basic knowledge about Korean traditions and culture will make the stay in Korea a lot more interesting and comfortable.
Launch of the King Sejong Institute operations in Latvia is an essential step in promoting cooperation in the spheres of research and culture between Latvia and the Republic of Korea.
