The Riga Technical University Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning and the International and Public Relations Department invite students of urban planning, architecture, landscape architecture, geography, fine arts and social sciences to participate in the International Summer School 2012.

The summer school takes place from 27 July to 11 August 2012 in Riga and Cēsis.

Topic

Cities are formed around events and rituals and their processions. Agricultural, seasonal, social, political, commercial, religious, even mythological festivities - there is no living city without action or without a program.

People have a desire for rituals; some of the most incredible structures in the world were built for this purpose. Over millennia they have organized their lives and built the environment around them. Rituals give shape, form and meaning to social relationships, while human settlements become vessels for entire social assemblies – event cities.

As rituals give rise to architecture, architecture in its turn perpetuates new rituals. The Summer School will explore this exchange in either or both of these directions. Moreover, it will position itself among the collisions of programs and spaces, in which the two blend, combine and draw one another into the triggering of events.

The static notions of form and function long favored by modernists will be replaced by devoting attention to the contemporary forms of life that occur in and around buildings, to the movement of bodies, activities, cultural codes, the associated material worlds, aspirations, the social and political dimension of architecture.
