Mārtiņš Vilnītis, Dean of the Faculty of Civil Engineering at RTU, presents the award to the winners of the hackathon «BIMHack 2023».

The idea of green moss walls for building facades, which would help to solve the problem of air pollution, wins the construction innovation hackathon «BIMHack 2023», implemented for the second year by Riga Technical University (RTU) Science and Innovation Centre together with partners. The technology is based on recyclable solar panels, while also tackling the problem of waste from the solar industry.

The innovative idea is being developed by the student team «MossHub» from the University of Liepaja, which won a cash prize of EUR 1 500 for the solution developed at the hackathon.

The second place in the hackathon and a prize of €1000 was awarded to the team «Be visually smart» for developing a digital assistant to analyse and improve building characterisation reports, to monitor the data, to model possible solutions using artificial intelligence technologies, to forecast the budget and to develop the most optimal models for the implementation of the construction process. The third place winner in the hackathon was «WatchBuilt», with an integrated information gathering, processing and reporting tool that would offer medium and large design and construction general contractors real-time site data collection, AI-generated reports and accurate plan and execution analysis. The team received a cash prize of €500 for this solution.

The team «Mission BIMpossible», led by Matijs Babris, a PhD student at RTU Faculty of Architecture, won the Sympathy Award from RTU Science and Innovation Centre. The team presented the idea of complementing grey and slow digital twins with fast and usable visual digital twins.

During the five-day hackathon, innovative solutions were created and interdisciplinary teams were formed, which initially pitched 12 ideas in three thematic areas - security, sustainability and productivity. At the end of the event, nine teams presented their ideas to the jury.

The Hackathon was organised by RTU Science and Innovation Centre in cooperation with Latvian National Standardisation Institution «Latvijas standarts» Ltd, RTU Faculty of Civil Engineering, SJSC «Valsts nekustamie īpašumi», State Labour Inspectorate, «ITED» Ltd, «Sitera» Ltd, «BIM Solutions» Ltd, Latvian Construction Contractors Association and other partners from the construction industry.
