The equipment of the «Mitutoyo» metrology laboratory at the Institute of Mechanics and Mechanical Engineering of Riga Technical University (RTU), Faculty of Civil and Mechanical Engineering, has been supplemented with the Quick Vision QV-X302T1L-E high-precision 3D optical measuring machine, which allows to measure various object dimensions with micrometer precision.

It is the most advanced measuring machine of its kind in Latvia and is planned to be actively used in scientific research where precise geometry measurements are required for samples and parts with fine geometry, such as electrical components, highly flexible samples made of plastic, rubber, etc. thin-walled parts, as well as fragile or shaky materials. Measurements are possible because the equipment does not physically touch the object during the measurement process. It is fully automated, which is particularly handy when it is necessary to monitor large volumes with identical samples.

The equipment will be immediately used in the Latvian Science Council project «Innovative multifunctional laser-textured surfaces with improved tribological and anti-icing properties», the national research programme «Innovations, methodologies and recommendations for the development and management of the sports sector in Latvia», RTU platform project «Novel surface functionalised whispering gallery mode resonator shaped laser light source for fibre optic communication systems» and RTU scientific staff capacity building project «Impact of 3D surface texture on the accuracy of microhardness measurements».

The head of the laboratory, Jānis Lungevičs, invites colleagues from other RTU departments to use the equipment in various scientific projects.

The manufacturing industry is also very interested in the equipment. This was also one of the most important arguments in the negotiations with «Mitutoyo Poland» to install such a machine in the Institute of Mechanics and Mechanical Engineering laboratory.

The «Mitutoyo» laboratory is the most modern and best equipped geometric metrology laboratory in the Baltics. Since its establishment in 2018, it has been regularly upgraded, with state-of-the-art laboratory equipment for dimensional measurement provided by «Mitutoyo Poland».
