Summary:

The project will produce: - A competency map and profiles required for alternative career paths ashore. - An online tool to be used by seafarers that will help the integration of their career ashore. The partnership are composed of by maritime school, nautical academies, online training company, maritime training providers from 6 EU countries (LV, ES,TR, LT, GR, HR) ensure both sound implementation and sustainability of the project. The maritime industry has a shortage of qualified personnel who has sea experience, especially in shore based jobs in maritime world in Europe. Further deployment of skills and experience seafarers in shore based positions can help solve Europe's major skill gap and improve the quality and safety of operations ashore in maritime sector. Skills that sea going staff collects through the years of experience have not been properly utilised in shore based positions. One major contributing factor for this shortage of qualified personnel ashore is a lack of international promotions and activities, which inhibits the transferability of seafarers skills to shore based jobs. It has become a central challenge for Europe, affecting all layers of maritime sector. The SEA4SHORE project addresses the need for cooperation between seafarers and maritime companies ashore. This will be achieved by the promotion of more work related activities in the intended platform, including the innovative models of work placement. The project team will identify and map available maritime careers ashore in partner countries, in order for employers and employees/trainees to take advantage of the opportunities efficiently and effectively. It will be the focus of SEA4SHORE project to make sure that the skills that seafarers attained during there education and training or on the job at sea will be utilised primarily in maritime sector so there will be no waste of skills. The project will work towards making seafarers skills recognised in shore based jobs hence allow more work mobility for European citizens. The cost for the education and training of a young adult in the area of vocational education and training (VET) is significant whether this is met through individuals, sponsors or government funds yet there is a significant need to attract youngsters to sea looking at the priorities of Europe. According to EUROSTAT statistics covering 2001-2019, more than 60 percent of Europe transportation is conducted through seas and is on the steady rise compared to rail, road and air therefore it requires a significant supply of labour, both at sea and ashore, for today and tomorrow as Europe spend significant efforts to make sure sea transportations are constantly developing and evolving to reach golden standards . There are obstacles in the harmonisation of sea and shore staffs within maritime industry has been positioning the right skills ashore which ideally should come from the hearth of sea which we call SEAFARERS.
