University

RTU is a modern internationally recognized university. It is the only polytechnic university in Latvia and the largest university in the country – it educates and trains almost 15 thousand students.

RTU is focused on becoming a third generation university that not only provides high quality education, but also conducts advanced research and ensures innovation and technology transfer, practically implementing scientific discoveries. In the faculties of RTU it is possible to obtain high quality education not only in engineering, but also in social sciences and humanities.

Study programs implemented by RTU have been positively evaluated by international experts and are officially accredited. RTU is constantly developing its infrastructure by constructing a campus on Ķīpsala Island. On completion, the campus will be the most advanced engineering study centre in the Baltic Region.

RTU Ķīpsala Campus

RTU is the first higher education institution in Latvia that already in 1965 began construction of campus at Ķīpsala. The construction continues and it is planned that by 2020 a majority of university students are going to be educated at Ķīpsala Campus.

Strategy

The keynote of the strategy of the Riga Technical University is the proactive link between the activity of the university and the needs of the national economy, focus on high quality and effectiveness. The basis for the activity of RTU is the study process built on science, innovation and in cooperation with the industry, which ensures preparation of specialists required by the Latvian national economy, thus serving as a foundation for sustainable growth of Latvia.

Constitution of Riga Technical University

Riga Technical University (hereinafter referred to as RTU) is the oldest higher technical educational establishment in the Baltic States, the direct predecessor of which – Riga Polytechnicum – started operating on 14 October 1862.

Structure and administration

The Law on Institutions of Higher Education of the Republic of Latvia stipulates that higher education institutions (HEIs) are autonomous educational and research institutions with the right for self-government. This autonomy is characterized by allocation of rights and duties between state institutions and HEI administration, as well as between administration and academic personnel.  

Rankings

Rankings provide RTU the opportunity to evaluate own performance in accordance with the international criteria and compare itself with other higher education establishments in Latvia and over the world. Ten different rating evaluations let more accurately identify strengths and weaknesses, set new goals to ensure progress in studies, research and overall University performance, as well as monitor general development dynamics.
