RTU Scientist of the Year

In 2006, competition for the title RTU Scientist of the Year and RTU Young Scientist of the Year was announced for the first time to promote research activity at RTU, facilitate involvement of young scientists in research and evaluate RTU research achievements.

Completing an application form, it is necessary to specify research achievements of the candidate in the current and previous calendar year, e.g. organizational activities within research and scientific events, as well as at research institutions, highly ranked international scientific publications, volume of funded attracted to RTU, number of Doctoral students supervised, Doctoral Theses developed and defended under supervision of the candidate, participation in research projects, patents and licenses granted or information on any other creative achievements.

RTU Scientist of the Year 2018

In 2018, the honorary title «RTU Scientist of the Year» was awarded to Jānis Ločs, Head and Leading Researcher of the Institute of General Chemical Engineering of RTU Faculty of Materials Science and Applied Chemistry.

In the 2017/2018 academic year, J. Ločs wrote nineteen Scopus-indexed publications. Under his guidance, three Master Papers and one Bachelor Paper have been developed and defended, and currently three Doctoral Theses are being elaborated.

In the 2017/2018 academic year, within research projects J. Ločs attracted 1.3 million EUR to RTU.

Jānis Ločs is a member of RTU Senate, a member of RTU Council of the Faculty of Materials Science and Applied Chemistry and coordinator of RTU Research Platform «Materials, Processes and Technologies». J. Ločs is an expert of the Latvian Council of Science in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Materials Science. He is the national representative of the European Society for Biomaterials «Young Scientists’ Forum» in Latvia. J. Ločs participates in the ERA-NET Strategic Expert Group and the COST Project Evaluation Board. J. Ločs is a board member of the Scandinavian Society for Biomaterials and a member of the Committee for Socio-Economic Analysis of the European Chemicals Agency.

Jānis Ločs was awarded the honorary title «RTU Scientist of the Year» on 12 October 2018 , during the plenary session of the 59th International Scientific Conference of RTU.

RTU Scientist of the Year 2017

The honorary title of «RTU Scientist of the Year 2017» has been awarded to Professor Dagnija Blumberga, the Head of the Institute of Environmental Protection and Heating Systems, Faculty of Power and Electrical Engineering.
D.Blumberga is a well-recognised expert in Latvia in such areas as energy and environment. Her research is related to energy planning, energy efficiency, environmental science, renewable energy and biotechnomics – a form of business that aims to create high-value-added products through the maximally efficient use of raw materials to conserve nature and reduce human impact on the climate.

From January 1, 2016 till September 1, 2017 D.Blumberga has published 74 papers indexed in Scopus database, four scientific monographs and received four patents. Among RTU scientists she has the largest number of publications that are cited in the prestigious Scopus database with the highest citation index per publication.

From 2016 till 2017 Professor has attracted 1.5 million EUR to RTU and participated in the development of nine international research projects.

During this time, D.Blumberga has been the scientific advisor of 16 Doctoral Theses, of which three have been defended.

D.Blumberga is the author of idea of creating the scientific journal «Environmental and Climate Technologies» and the chair of scientific committee of the journal. The issues of this journal are published in «Energy Procedia» included in «Science Direct», as well as indexed in the prestigious Scopus database.

D.Blumberga received the award «RTU Scientist of the Year 2017» on October 14, 2017 during the plenary session of the 58th International Scientific Conference of RTU.

RTU Scientist of the Year 2016

Karlis Andris Gross The Award «RTU Scientist of the Year 2016» has been awarded to Karlis Agris Gross, Leading Researcher of the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry, Faculty of Materials Science and Applied Chemistry.

In 2015 and 2016, Karlis Agris Gross published 12 papers. Hirsch index for K.A.Gross publications is 29.

Karlis Agris Gross is the Vice-President of the Scandinavian Society for Biomaterials and in 2015 he was the Chair of the Annual Biomaterials Meeting. He is the Head of RTU Biomaterials Research Laboratory, Chair of Engineering Science Section of Scientific Conference of Latvian Secondary School Students, as well as till 2016 he was the leader of Latvian Interuniversity calcium phosphate research group.

Karlis Agris Gross is editorial board member of the following journals: Bioactive MaterialsJournal of Materials Science: Materials in Medicine, Journal of the Australian Ceramics Society, till 2016 he was editorial board member of Journal of Thermal Spray Technology.

K.A.Gross is a member of Australian Research Council, National Health and Medical Research Council (Australia), National Research Council (Canada) and  FRST (New Zealand). K.A.Gross is expert at the State Committee of Science of the Republic of Armenia and FP7 project «Small to Medium Enterprise».

Karlis Agris Gross delivers study courses «Writing Scientific Articles according to International Standards» and «Academic Writing» at RTU.

From 2015 till 2016, five Doctoral Theses have been elaborated under his supervision.

RTU Scientist of the Year 2015

In 2015, an honorary title of RTU Scientist of the Year was awarded to the Director of the Institute of Silicate Materials and the Head of the Department of Silicate, High Temperature and Inorganic Nanomaterials Technology of RTU Faculty of Materials Science and Applied Chemistry professor Gundars Mežinskis.

From 1 January 2014 to 1 September 2015 Gundars Mežinskis published eight papers indexed in SCOPUS database and three papers in the scientific journals published by RTU.

In 2014 and 2015, his publications were quoted 106 times. In 2014-2015, G. Mežinskis delivered reports at two conferences, took part in organizing international conferences in Slovenia, Poland, and Latvia, he also supervised four Doctoral Theses and four Master Papers.

From 1 January 2014 to 31 August 2015 RTU Institute of Silicate Materials under the lead of G. Mežinskis attracted funding amounting to 552,635 EUR. In the same period of time four European patent applications were submitted under his supervision. Gundars Mežinskis is a member of RTU Scientific Council, member of the Council of the Faculty of Materials Science and Applied Chemistry, Director of RTU Master Study Program Nanotechnologies of Materials. He is a member of the editorial board of RTU scientific journal «Materials Science and Applied Chemistry», journals published by Kaunas University of Technology «Cheminè Technologija» and «Journal of Sustainable Architecture and Civil Engineering». He is a member of RTU P-02 and RTU P-01 Promotional Councils.

RTU Scientist of the Year 2015 Gundars Mežinskis was honored at the Plenary Session of the 56th RTU International Scientific Conference on 14 October 2015.

RTU Scientist of the Year 2014

The honorary title of «The Scientist of the Year 2014» was awarded to Professor Andris Cate (Andris Čate), Director of RTU Institute of Materials and Structures, Head of the Department of Composite Materials and Structures.

Andris Cate is the author of more than 180 scientific publications, 120 of them are quoted in the prestigious SCOPUS database. The funding of more than 1 million euro has been attracted to RTU research activities under his guidance.  

Professor Andris Cate combines research activities with the work of the corresponding member of the Latvian Academy of Sciences, he is a member of RTU Promotion Councils «RTU P-03» and «RTU P-06». Moreover, he is the member of RTU Professor Council for Mechanical Engineering, Construction and Architecture Sciences. Andris Cate is a member of the editorial board of the journal «Aviation» (indexed in Scopus database), as well as the member of the editorial board of the second edition of RTU scientific journal «Construction Science».

Every year under the guidance of Andris Cate Doctoral students of RTU develop their promotion works.

Andris Cate has been awarded the title «RTU Scientist of the Year 2014» on October 14, 2014 at the plenary session of the 55th RTU International Scientific Conference.

RTU Scientist of the Year 2013

The honorary title of «The Scientist of the Year 2013» was awarded to Professor Janis Zicans (Jānis Zicāns), Dr. sc. ing., Director of RTU Institute of Polymer Materials and Head of Polymer Material Testing Laboratory.

From January 1, 2012, to September 1, 2013, Janis Zicans developed 13 publications indexed in SCOPUS database, as well as managed three EU 7th Framework Programme projects, three ERDF projects, two national research program project, one ESF project and one international cooperation project.

Under the guidance of Janis Zicans the funding of approximately 1 million LVL was attracted to RTU, one patent was obtained in Latvia and one application for the international patent was submitted.

Janis Zicans was the organiser of the conference «Baltic Polymer Symposium 2012». He was a member of the international organisation committee of the conference «SLAVPOLIKOM 2013» and a member of the international organization committee of the conference «BALTTRIB 2013».

Janis Zicans is the Head of the Latvian Council of Science expert committee 2.2 «Engineering Sciences», RTU Senator, a member of RTU Scientific Senate, a member of finance and budget commission, a member of the board of RTU Faculty of Materials Science and Applied Chemistry, Director of RTU Institute of Polymer Materials of the Faculty of Materials Science and Applied Chemistry, Head of Polymer Material Testing Laboratory of RTU Institute of Polymer Materials, a member of the editorial board of the scientific publication «Elastomers», a member of the editorial board of the RTU collection of scientific publications «Material Science and Applied Chemistry», a member of the editorial board of the scientific journal «Progress in Rubber, Plastics and Recycling Technology», a member of the promotion councils «RTU P-02» and «RTU P-01».

Janis Zicans was awarded the title «RTU Scientist of the Year 2013» on October 14, 2013 at the plenary session of the 54th RTU International Scientific Conference.

RTU Scientist of the Year 2012

The honorary title of «The Scientist of the Year 2012» was awarded to Liga Berzina-Cimdina (Līga Bērziņa-Cimdiņa), Dr. sc. ing., Professor of the Institute of General Chemical Engineering of the Faculty of Materials Science and Applied Chemistry.

From January 1, 2011 to September 1, 2012 professor Liga Berzina-Cimdina developed sixty two scientific publications published in conference proceedings, twenty one publication in scientific journals, three publications in RTU collection of scientific publications, as well as participated in twenty three conferences held in Latvia and forty conferences abroad.

In the lapse of time from January 1, 2011 to September 1, 2012 under the guidance of the professor two Master theses, five Doctoral dissertations and two promotion works were defended. During this period, Liga Berzina-Cimdina participated in eleven scientific projects and managed twelve scientific projects, attracting approximately 805,000 LVL to RTU. She submitted five patent applications which were later granted.   

Professor Liga Berzina-Cimdina is a member of Latvian Materials Research Society and the head of Biomaterials Section, as well as a member of the European Ceramic Society Council, a member of the editorial board of the ECerS journal «Journal of the European Ceramic Society» and the RTU scientific journal «Materials Science and Applied Chemistry», an expert of Latvian Academy of Sciences, an expert of the promotion councils «RTU P-18» and «RTU P-03» and a member of RTU Senate. Moreover, Liga Berzina-Cimdina is a member of the Latvian Union of Scientists, the European Society for Biomaterials (ESB), the International Ceramic Society (ICS).

Liga Berzina-Cimdina was awarded the title «RTU Scientist of the Year 2012» on October 11, 2012 at the plenary session of the 53th RTU International Scientific Conference.

RTU Scientist of the Year 2011

The honorary title of «The Scientist of the Year 2011» was awarded to Professor Janis Rudzitis (Jānis Rudzītis), Head of the Institute of Mechanical Engineering Technologies of the Faculty of Transport and Mechanical Engineering.

From September 1, 2010 to September 1, 2011 Janis Rudzitis on the basis of conducted research developed six significant scientific publications in the conference proceedings, one publication in a scientific journal, and one publication in other scientific editions. Professor participated in one scientific conference in Latvia and six foreign conferences (in Poland, Bosnia and Herzegovina and other countries).

From January 1, 2010 to September 1, 2011 under the guidance of Janis Rudzitis two Master theses and two promotion works were defended. He tutors six PhD students.

The most significant projects:

  • «The development of industrial prototype technology aimed to create a nano-structured ion-plasmous wear resistant coating»;
  • «The surfaces of mechanical elements and nanotechnological exploration of their internal structure in mechanical engineering»;
  • «Research on materials surfaces and macrostructure properties»;
  • «The registration of mechatronic system control lines operation»;
  • «Industrial productivity of small continuously working fish dosing equipment»;
  • «The technology of titanium application to flexible metallic base in vacuum»;
  • «Research on characterising dimensions of non-metallic material nano coverings»;
  • «Research on characterising three-dimensional non-standard parameters of nano covering roughness».

Developing the mentioned projects and performing the contracted works Janis Rudzitis attracted to Riga Technical University around two million LVL.

Organizational work: member of RTU Senate, the head of the 2nd NEK. of the Latvian Council of Science, member of the scientific expertise committee of the Latvian Council of Science, member of the Strategic Committee of the Latvian Council of Science, a member of the board of the Latvian National Committee for Mechanics, a member of the European Society for Precision Engineering and Nanotechnology (EU SPEN), the president of the professors council of the mechanical engineering industry, the head of the RTU promotion council «RTU P-16», a member of the State Scientific Qualification Committee.

RTU Scientist of the Year 2010

The honorary title of «The Scientist of the Year 2010» was awarded to Professor Janis Viba (Jānis Vība), Dr. habil. sc. ing., Director of the Institute of Mechanics (IM) of the Faculty of Transport and Mechanical Engineering (FTME) and the Head of Theoretical Mechanics and Strength of Materials Department.

From January 1, 2009 to September 1, 2010 Janis Viba developed ten significant scientific publications in the conference proceedings, five publications in the RTU collection of scientific proceedings and eight publications in scientific journals based on the conducted research. Professor participated in two Latvian scientific conferences delivering reports and three conferences abroad (in Russia, Lithuania and other countries), applied for and obtained eight patents. From January 1, 2009 to September 1, 2010 under the supervision of Janis Viba ten Master theses were defended. He tutors the development of four Doctoral dissertations. Professor actively participated in and led several research projects:

European Union FP7 project FILOSE on «Robotic Fish Locomotion and Sensing»;

The thematic research project of the Latvian Council of Science «The creation of innovative discrete and continuous systems, technologies, composite materials and mechatronic systems using dynamic analysis, optimisation and structural synthesis methods»;

RTU fundamental and applied research projects:

  • «The analysis of shape parameters of objects in stationary and oscillatory air streams»;
  • «Reinforced elastomer (rubber) products complex mechanical properties identification and new structure synthesis».

Developing the mentioned projects, Janis Viba attracted to Riga Technical University around 233 thousand LVL for research activities.

Organizational work at scientific events and institutes: the head of the expert commission for «Engineering and Computer Science» at the Latvian Council of Science, a member of the Senate of the Latvian Academy of Science, a member of the board of the Latvian National Mechanics Committee and the head of scientific seminar, a corresponding member of the Department of Physics and Technical Sciences of the Latvian Academy of Sciences, the head of the RTU promotion council «RTU P-04».

Janis Viba was awarded the title «RTU Scientist of the Year 2010» on October 14, 2010 at the plenary session of the 51st RTU International Scientific Conference.

RTU Scientist of the Year 2009

The honorary title of «The Scientist of the Year 2009» was awarded to Professor Valdis Kampars, Dr. habil. chem., Head of the Institute of Applied Chemistry (IAC) of the Faculty of Materials Science and Applied Chemistry (FMSAC) and Secretary General of the Latvian Academy of Sciences (LAS).

From January 1, 2008 to September 1, 2009 Valdis Kampars developed a number of significant scientific publications concerning the performed research. In this period, professor participated in two Latvian scientific conferences delivering reports and five foreign conferences (in the Czech Republic, France, Finland and other countries). From January 1, 2008 to September 1, 2009 under the supervision of Valdis Kampars one Master thesis and one promotion work were defended. Professor tutors four Doctoral dissertations. Professor actively participated in and led several research projects:

ESF project «The development of multimedia courses of general natural sciences (physics, chemistry, materials sciences and math) for the engineering students of technical universities».

National research program projects «Materials for photonics and nanoelectronics based on new functional low-molecular and high-molecular organic compounds» and «The optimization of biofuel production and usage».

Ministry of Economics project «The contact point of technology transfer. Biodiesel and biodiesel containing diesel fuel production and quality assurance».

RTU in-house scientific research project «The synthesis of high-boiling solvents from glycerine».

RTU fundamental and applied research project «The development of synthesis methods for PEG fragments containing mono and binary nonlinear chromophores».

Developing the mentioned projects, Valdis Kampars attracted to Riga Technical University around 500 thousand LVL for research activities.

From January 1, 2008 to September 1, 2009 Valdis Kampars was a member of the European Biofuel platform mirror committee, a member of the Latvian State Scientific Qualification Commission, a member of the Biofuel Policy Work Group of the Republic of Latvia, a managing editor of the RTU Chemical series scientific publications, a member of RTU scientific conference organizing committee, the head of «The Institute of Applied Chemistry» registered in the register of scientific institutions of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Latvia and Secretary General of the Latvian Academy of Sciences.

Valdis Kampars was awarded the title «RTU Scientist of the Year 2009» on October 14, 2009 at the plenary session of the 50th RTU International Scientific Conference.

RTU Scientist of the Year 2008

The honorary title of «The Scientist of the Year 2008» was awarded to Antan Saulus Sauhats (Antan Sauļus Sauhats), Dr. habil. sc. ing., Professor of the Institute of Power Engineering of the Faculty of Power and Electrical Engineering.

From January 1, 2007 to September 1, 2008 Antan Saulus Sauhats developed a number of significant scientific publications concerning the conducted research. In this period, professor participated in one Latvian scientific conference delivering a report and twelve conferences abroad (in Portugal, Scotland, Slovakia, Switzerland, Lithuania, Estonia, etc.). In the lapse of time from January 1, 2007 to September 1, 2008 under the supervision of Antan Saulus Sauhats four Master theses and four promotion works were defended. Professor tutors ten Doctoral dissertations.

Professor Antan Saulus Sauhats has actively participated in and led a number of research projects:

FP6 Project: SES6-CT-2003-503516 The Birth of a European Distributed Energy Partnership that will help the Large-Scale Implementation of Distributed Energy Resources in Europe (EUDEEP).

Fp7 Project: Grant agreement 211407, Pan European Advanced Simulation and State Estimation (PEGASE).

FP7 Project: Grant agreement 227122, Intelligent coordination of operation and emergency control of EU and Russian power grids.

The Latvian Council of Science projects «The use of global communication nets in power system protective relaying and emergency control automatics» and «The synthesis of power system optimization and automation methods, algorithms and resources».

National research program project «Energy supply safety increase methods, technologies and analysis of their determining factors».

The Ministry of Education and Science – RTU research projects «Technically economic substantiation of low and average power cogeneration stations» and «Power system emergency control automatics efficiency increase methods and resources».

From January 1, 2007 to September 1, 2008 Antan Saulus Sauhats was the head of the RTU promotion council «RTU P-05», the head of power industry professor council, an expert of the Latvian Council of Science, a member of Scientific Committee of RTU Senate, a head of Scientific Committee of the Faculty of Power and Electrical Engineering, a managing editor of the RTU collection of publications «Power and Electrical Engineering», a member of Doctoral Committee at Kaunas University of Technology, invited expert of the Saeima Commission of the Republic of Lithuania on the Ignalina nuclear power plant problems; a member of the editorial board of international scientific journal «Power Engineering» (Minsk); a member of organization committees of international conferences in Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Slovakia; an expert reviewer of the conference PSCC (Glasgow 2008), a member of the organizing committee of the conference «Powertech 2009»; Chairman of Scientific and Education Committee of the Latvian Association of Power Engineers, a member of Latvenergo technical council.

Antan Saulus Sauhats has received a certificate of appreciation from Ltd. «ABB» the Latvian fund of education special purpose program «For Education, Science and Culture» in recognition of his work on educating and training highly qualified specialists.

Professor Antan Saulus Sauhats was awarded the title «RTU Scientist of the Year 2008» on October 14, 2008 at the plenary session of the 49th RTU International Scientific Conference.

RTU Scientist of the Year 2007
The honorary title of «The Scientist of the Year 2007» was awarded to Maris Knite (Māris Knite), Dr. habil. phys., Professor of Solid State Physics professor group of the Institute of Technical Physics of the Faculty of Materials Science and Applied Chemistry, Director of the Institute of Technical Physics.

From January 1, 2006 to September 1, 2007 Maris Knite developed a number of significant scientific publications concerning the conducted research, co-authored the development of three study aids («Physics I, Fundamentals of Mechanics. Fundamentals of Molecular Physics and Thermodynamics», «Tasks on General Physics», «Wave Optics»), participated in seven Latvian scientific conferences delivering reports and twelve conferences abroad (in Slovakia, France, Poland, Switzerland, Austria, Finland, Singapore and Portugal). In the lapse of time from January 1, 2006 to September 1, 2007 under the supervision of Maris Knite one Master thesis was defended. Professor tutors two Doctoral dissertations. Maris Knite actively participated in and led a number of research projects:

ESF project «The development of multimedia teaching materials on general natural sciences for engineering students of technical universities».

The Latvian Council of Science projects «Functional micro- and nanocomposites as sensors and acustors: design, production and research of physical properties» and «Multifunctional electroactive composite materials including nanocomposites».

National research program projects «Modern functional materials for microelectronics, nanoelectronics, photonics, biomedicine and constructive composites, as well as corresponding technologies development» and «Sensing effects in polyisoprene and nanostructured carbon composite».

(Developing the mentioned projects, Maris Knite attracted to Riga Technical University more than 200 thousand LVL for research activities).

From January 1, 2006 to September 1, 2007, the Director of Institute of Technical Physics Maris Knite was an editor of Scientific Proceedings of Riga Technical University «Materials Science and Applied Chemistry», in September of 2006 he was elected international expert in material physics COST (European Cooperation in the Field of Scientific and Technical research) programme subprogram DC: Materials, Physical and Nanosciences. Maris Knite was included in the list of the Latvian Academy of Sciences Year Book 2007, chapter «Significant events in the Latvian science and the Latvian Academy of Sciences in 2006» dedicated to outstanding scientific attainments (page 109): «Created and studied elastomer and carbon nanostructured particles composite that demonstrates excellent deformation sensor and gas sensor properties».

Maris Knite is a member of the Latvian Physics Society, a member of the Latvian Materials Research Society, since December 2006 a member of the American Chemistry Society (ACS), since December 2004 a member of the European Materials Research Society (EMRS).

Maris Knite was awarded the title «RTU Scientist of the Year 2007» on October 11, 2007 at the plenary session of the 48th RTU International Scientific Conference, within the framework of the celebration of the 145th anniversary of Riga Technical University.

RTU Scientist of the Year 2006

The honorary title of «The Scientist of the Year 2006» was awarded to Janis Grundspenkis (Jānis Grundspeņķis), Dr. habil. sc. ing., Professor of the Department of Systems Theory and Design of the Institute of Applied Computer Systems of the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology.

From January 1, 2005 to September 1, 2006 Janis Grundspenkis published 16 significant scientific publications concerning the performed research, 4 publications in the Collection of Scientific Proceedings of Riga Technical University and 2 publications in scientific editions. He participated in 2 Latvian scientific conferences delivering reports and 1 foreign conference. In the lapse of time from January 1, 2005 to September 1, 2006 under the supervision of Janis Grundspenkis 8 Master theses and 1 promotion work were defended. Professor tutors 8 Doctoral dissertations. Janis Grundspenkis actively participated in and led a number of research projects:

Developing the mentioned projects, Janis Grundspenkis attracted to Riga Technical University 213,725 LVL for research activities.

From January 1, 2005 to September 1, 2006 Janis Grundspenkis has been a member of the following conference program committees: Conference on Advanced Information Systems Engineering (CAiSE), International Conference on Computer Systems and Technologies (CompSysTech), International Conference on Information Systems Development (ISD), International Baltic Conference on Databases and Information Systems (Baltic DB&IS) and managing editor of the 5th series of RTU scientific publications collection.

Jānis Grundspenkis was awarded the title «RTU Scientist of the Year 2006» on October 14, 2006 at the plenary session of the 47th RTU International Scientific Conference.
