Description of Editorial & Publishing Services at RTU Press

Literary Editing in British English:

Correcting British English spelling (punctuation, orthography, syntax) and style errors according to the specific nature of scientific text.

Content and formal arrangement of text, focusing on the following points: checking/correcting the numbering of pictures and tables; verifying/correcting the hierarchy of headings and subheadings; verifying/providing recommendations for headings matching the text content.

Verification of the coherence and consistency of terms and concepts; making recommendations based on edited results.

Making final corrections based on feedback provided by the authors.

The size of the English language Editor’s Page is 1800 characters, including spaces.

Literary Editing in Latvian:

Correcting Latvian spelling (punctuation, orthography, syntax) and style errors according to the specific nature of the scientific text.

Verifying the distinctive meaning of terms and concepts, making recommendations for improvement.

Making final corrections based on feedback provided by the authors.

The size of the Editor's Page in the Latvian language is 2500 characters, including spaces.

Technical editing:

Technical editing and correcting includes: design of labels, formulas, and numbers according to industry standards, most often following NIST or IEEE recommendations and standards.

Unifying the terms used in text, pictures, and formulas.

Correcting list of references and literature used according to the industry reference style, most of following IEEE and APA formats. Adding active DOIs to the reference list.

Scientific editing:

Correcting the terminology of an article according to the specific nature of the most recent scientific terminology of the field.

Checking the contents of an article if the illustrations, pictures, tables, and charts, match text descriptions and make corrections and recommendations accordingly.

Typesetting:

Layout design in Word, the service includes: checking/correcting text formatting, checking/correcting table and image placement, proofing, preparing an article for electronic and/or print publishing.

Layout design in InDesign, the service includes: designing master pages, creating a layout, transforming formulas, preparing or redrawing images according to a sketch, proofing, preparing files for electronic and/or print publication.

Proofreading:

Correct punctuation and orthography errors in the layout of the finished article.

Checking basic information for accuracy of a scientific article.

Electronic publishing:

Electronic publishing in the Open Journal System. The service includes: entering scientific articles and metadata into OJS, activating DOI numbers, contacting the Crossref association, communication with appropriate databases.

Providers of electronic publishing in other platforms, e.g. De Gruyter - SCIENDO. Services needed: recording metadata, uploading files. Matching adjustments to meet SCIENDO requirements.

Article archiving in the RTU Repository (ZDAS). Recording data in ZDAS.

Project management:

Recruitment of external service providers such as editors and coordinating the activities to complete the work; providing quality control when the work is done.

Checking the manuscript for plagiarism using the iThenticate tool.

Coordinating editors' recommended corrections with authors.

Controlling technical quality of images, formulas, and reference lists.

Management of scheduling and time limits; taking necessary corrective measures in dealing with editors, authors and responsible authorities.

Verification of copyright licenses, authors, editors and reviewers' declaration of conflict of interest.

Generating DOI numbers and tracking its uniqueness. Issuing a DOI to the article.

Contacts with Latvian National Library and ISSN, ISBN number assignments to the editions.

Archiving the publication in the RTU Press archives.

Sending published issues to subscribers and communicating with databases.

Administrative expenditure:

In accordance with the RTU requirements the costs of providing services have been increased by ten percent to partially cover the costs of management and infrastructure of the RTU. The RTU Press also prepares royalty contracts and oversees financial flows.

Print file generation and providing print services:

Create a print job order for the print service provider.

Request and summarize printing costs according to the Print Service Purchase Agreement and match the selected options with the customer. Booking a commercial printer who is cost efficient and timely.

Designing the cover in InDesign. Making corrections based on feedback provided by the customer. Preparing print files for cover printing.

Preparing articles for print, optimization, processing, and proof reading.

Sending print files for digital or offset printing, receiving approval from a commercial print service provider, solving technical problems.

Acceptance and verification of printed product according to the order’s quantity and quality requirements. Signing of the Acceptance-Transfer act. Drawing up a Defect act, if required.

Transfer of mandatory printed copies to Latvian National Library and RTU Scientific Library, archiving of acts. Archiving printed materials according to archiving preservation acts.
