Riga Technical University (RTU) has been named as one of the top universities in Europe, according to the first ever edition of the «QS World University Rankings: Europe 2024» Global higher education analyst QS Quacquarelli Symonds has released its first Europe-wide ranking, the only significant regional ranking of European universities.

The results see RTU place 262nd in Europe and first amongst the seven included Latvian universities—placing RTU as one of the top 300 universities in Europe.

In general, the ranking evaluates the performance of universities in a very broad way - according to nine criteria, including, for example, academic reputation, proportion of students, income of graduates, sustainability, involvement in international research, citation and scientific publications.

«The ranking offers a unique opportunity for universities in the family of the most competitive higher education institutions to compare themselves with other players, while policy makers can evaluate the individual indicators of a given country's universities in the widest spectrum of aggregated data,» says Ben Sowter, senior vice president of the QS rankings system.

The University of Oxford received top honors in the inaugural European rankings, with the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology and the University of Cambridge taking second and third, respectively.

Amongst universities in the Baltics, the University of Tartu ranked the highest (137th), followed by the University of Vilnius (177th), Tallinn University of Technology (252nd) Kaunas University of Technology (275th), and the Vytautas the Great University (284th and 390th place, for Tallinn University).
