Goal 4. Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all

One of the main strategic tasks of Riga Technical University is to create and ensure high quality study process, give students and other interested parties knowledge that will help reach future goals and develop talents. RTU provides lifelong learning opportunities for all. The fact that students from all over the world study at this university is a sign of RTU study quality.

Goal 6. Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all

Scientific activities and research conducted by Riga Technical University in water treatment is the basis for ensuring sustainable development. RTU develops new water treatment equipment that will purify water by electrolysis using titanium oxide ceramics. Rods containing titanium oxide will be used as electrodes in the equipment. It is envisaged that water disinfection equipment will be intended for individual consumers. Currently preliminary research in development of the equipment has been done and a large research cycle has been started to investigate the range of properties of titanium oxide ceramics and the most optimal extraction technology.

Goal 7. Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all

Nowadays, life and economic activities cannot be imagined without electricity, thermal energy and fuel, namely – power supply. Economic growth, increase of the world’s population and urbanization has led to increasing demands for power supply systems. Moreover, being aware that amount of non-renewable energy resources (oil, coal, natural gas, etc.) is gradually reducing, sustainable power supply has become one of the main challenges. Riga Technical University scientists on the research platform “Energy and environment” develop technologies and solutions that are related to the following groups of issues:

  • electric power supply, heat supply, assurance of stable, qualitative, and optimal power supply of transport systems and their elements;
  • renewable energy sources, transformation and accumulation technologies for usage in electric power supply, heat supply, and transport;
  • power supply chains, i.e., energy efficiency of production, delivery, and consumption sector;
  • decrease of the environmental impact of climate technology energy supply;
  • energy system analysis and planning taking into consideration technical, environmental, and socio-economic aspects.

Infrastructure and industrialization are the priority areas of scientific activity at Riga Technical University. Research conducted at the university in the materials field is very diverse – from nanoparticle synthesis to calculations of large feasible structures, structural strength checks and sustainability forecasts.
The main research areas in the field of materials at RTU are as follows:

  • Synthesis and use of nanomaterials in the manufacturing of smart materials and specific products and modification of material properties;
  • Materials for electronics, photonics, optoelectronics and information technology;
  • Increase in security and strength of traditional materials and structures, as well as expansion of their application areas;
  • Optimization of technological processes of material and structure production from the perspective of energy and resource efficiency;
  • Expanded use and modification of secondary raw materials;
  • Development of environmentally friendly and energy-efficient materials and technological processes.

Modern cities are the most glaring proof of scientific and technological progress, so urban development issues are a global topicality attracting the attention of researchers around the world. Most of the world’s resources are consumed in cities, which are home to the majority of the planet’s population. Cities as the driving force of economic development, culture and innovation centers attract people to live, learn and work. At the same time, the concentration of people creates serious challenges for urban development professionals. Environmental and cultural heritage conservation, housing, mobility and infrastructure, employment and social problems – a wide range of issues illustrates the multidisciplinary, complex character of urban development.

Research in the field of defense and security are inextricably linked with the interests of the state, so active cooperation with public bodies is of major importance. The research platform of Riga Technical University “Security & Protection” is designed to promote interdisciplinary research in areas related to individual and national security. Research areas in the field of security cover a wide range of problems as today’s world threats are complex. Their prevention is a major challenge to specialists in different sciences and industries.

The main areas of activity of RTU Security and Defense Platform are:

  • Strategic products in terms of international security;
  • Border security;
  • National economic security;
  • Civil protection.
