RTU implements 21 accredited Doctoral study programmes in engineering, natural sciences, architecture, social and service sciences.
Doctoral Studies comprise theoretical courses, conducted in accordance with the curriculum, and scientific research. Upon finishing the Doctoral Studies, students have to defend Doctoral Thesis.
Duration of the full-time Doctoral Studies is four years. The part-time Doctoral Studies last for five years. The Doctoral Studies are conducted for 11 months p.a. in accordance with the Doctoral Studies schedule for the given academic year. The volume of the entire Doctoral study programme is 192 credit points.
Admission for full-time Doctoral Studies takes place annually during the second week of July. Admission for part-time Doctoral Studies takes place any time of the year.

Promotion is defence of a scientific work as a result of which the PhD degree is conferred.
The RTU Doctoral School was established in May 2010 with the aim to create support mechanism for young researchers within the Doctoral Studies Department. Main tasks of the Doctoral School are to improve research environment and quality of scientific work as well as to encourage interdisciplinary and interinstitutional cooperation among doctoral students.
