On 28 February at 16.15, a lecture on the development of artificial intelligence will be given by Jānis Grundspeņķis, Professor at the Faculty of Computer Science, Information Technology and Energy at RTU, where he will reveal what is behind artificial intelligence, what opportunities it offers and whether there is any reason to fear that the dominance of artificial intelligence could threaten humanity. The lecture is the second event in the «RTU Academic Readings» series.

From this year onwards, the RTU Academic Lectures are held regularly, once a month, to enable academics to pass on their knowledge capital and experience to younger colleagues and students, as well as to promote the exchange of ideas and discussions on current developments in different fields of science.

The lecture will take place at Zunda krastmala 10, room 102. It will be held in English so that international students and colleagues can actively participate. Participation is free of charge and prior registration is not required.

The programme of future «RTU Academic Readings»:

  • On 20 March, academician Jānis Krastiņš will present the heritage of Art Nouveau architecture in Latvia;
  • On 14 April, Academician Leonids Ribickis will give a lecture on how power electronics has influenced the development of technology in the 21st century;
  • On 20 May, a presentation by academician Māris Knite will provide insights into the development of smart materials;
  • On 25 September, Academician Jurijs Dehtjars will focus on current developments in biomedical research.

The RTU Council of Academicians is a consultative body open to all current and former academicians and corresponding members of the Latvian Academy of Sciences working at RTU. It was established to provide an opportunity for academics to express their views and share their experience. So far, the Council of RTU Academics has mainly worked to make recommendations to the RTU management for improving the quality of studies, mainly for improving the study content in mathematics, physics and chemistry.
