Why study at RTU LMA?

Seafaring jobs have long-established tradition in Latvia and are still in high demand today. Comparing the number of seafarers in relation to the economically active population, Latvia has consistently ranked first in the European Union and among the top 10 in the world for almost a decade. At the beginning of 2023, 10830 active seafarers have been registered in the Registry of Seamen of the Maritime Administration of Latvia.
Students and graduates of RTU Latvian Maritime Academy mention high salaries and the demand for highly qualified ship officers as one of the biggest benefits of working in the maritime industry, which greatly facilitates work and career development. RTU Latvian Maritime Academy is the only maritime education institution in Latvia able to prepare top-level maritime professionals. By continuing  the deep-rooted tradition of maritime education in Latvia, RTU Latvian Maritime Academy offers sustainable, multi-level, high-quality and globally recognised higher professional maritime education, providing the Latvian economy with academically educated and labour market-ready, competitive maritime professionals.
RTU Latvian Maritime Academy provides professional maritime education at all levels: vocational secondary education (RTU Latvian Maritime Academy Maritime school), undergraduate and postgraduate studies (RTU Latvian Maritime Academy professional higher education study programmes). All study programmes offered by RTU LMA provide students with the opportunity to acquire in-depth theoretical knowledge in line with the national standard, as well as competence-based practical skills for work at sea, in accordance with the requirements set by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW, as amended) modules.  During the study process, students acquire practical skills via regular training on simulators and shipboard practice, which is a mandatory requirement  for obtaining the final degree and professional qualification.
