Dear Colleague, dear Student, on behalf of the Directors Board, I am glad to invite you to attend the 2nd edition of the International Symposium on “Sustainable Construction” (SustaCon). The Symposium is organized by the Department of Civil Engineering (DICIV) and the Department of Information and Electric Engineering and Applied Mathematics (DIEM) of the University of Salerno (UNISA), in cooperation with the Faculty of Civil Engineering of Riga Technical University (RTU), Latvia, in the framework of the Sustainable Construction Community events.
It will take place online on the 2nd and the 3rd of September 2021.
The deadline for the application is August 15, 2021. Please note that the Committee will accept applications, even out of the deadline, until program seats are filled.
No fees are required. The event is financially supported by the University of Salerno.
The summer school «Sustainable Construction» is organized by the Faculty of Civil Engineering of RTU in cooperation with the University of Salerno (UNISA), and enterprise «Knauf».

«Sustainability» is one of the world’s most talked about but least understood words. Its meaning is often clouded by differing interpretations and by a tendency for the subject to be treated superficially. Traditionally the concept of sustainability embraces the preservation of the environment, as well as critical development-related issues such as the efficient use of resources, continual social progress, stable economic growth, and the eradication of poverty.
Within the summer school You will attend lectures of scientists in the fields of civil engineering, architecture and physics. Seminars will cover topics in the field of practical implementation of sustainable construction principles. You will visit several enterprises and construction projects, for example, ongoing projects in Riga Technical University (RTU) Campus and industrial enterprises like «Knauf», PERI and Latvian Wood Construction Cluster.
In addition, interdisciplinary teams will be formed to work with projects. Informal discussions will be held about the modern issues of formation in the field of sustainable construction, civil engineering and physics. The summer school is aimed to provide new generation of participants with the ability to develop interdisciplinary thinking.

Lecture @ Sustainable Construction – From the Cargolifter Airship Hangar to Tropical Island
A hangar of enormous dimensions, for developing production and operation of airship plant, has been built near Berlin, on former military airfield site in 1999/2000. Overall dimensions of 220 m in width, 360 m in length and 107 m in height made this building one of the biggest steel buildings in the world. For building of such size standard solutions could not have been applied and some regulations and guidelines were not applicable either.
Short introduction on history of airship hangars, is followed by description of the design, construction, fabrication and building process of this one, ordered by German company Cargolifter. The central part of the hangar is of cylindrical shape consisting five steel arches covered with a PVC coated polyester fabric. At both ends of the building are doors which consist of two fixed and six movable elements.
After announced insolvency of Cargolifter in 2002, the hangar was modified into a leisure park with bathing areas and a tropical rain forest. Four of the southwards directed roof bays were replaced by PTFE, which guarantees
a high general transparency to let in natural light. Based on the deflections of the original fabric an innovative huge pneumatic cushion was developed.
At the end, discussion is focused on problem of future hangar conservation.

Lecture @ Sustainable Construction – Application of large span structures for heritage sites – towards sustainable urban/metropolitan/megacity development
Recent growth of urban areas towards development of metropolises and megacities further increases requirements for efficient land use, and it as well further endangers heritage properties which are usually occupying best locations. Spreading of infra- and supra-structures into countryside lead to discovery of new archaeological sites, and it is reasonable to expect that the number of presented archaeological sites will increase in the future. Lack of heritage in an urban area typically correlates to variety of social and economic problems. On the other hand, heritage sites, with proper management, increase quality of life, employment, improve income of local households and serve as overall catalysts of sustainable development.
Large span structures applied for roofs, shelters or bridges enable preserving heritage sites, at the same time generating valuable new public areas when possible in symbioses with additional function according to contemporary needs. Large spans structures combined with other technical solutions (IKT, eco-friendly materials, green energy production etc.) are expected to be more often used as part of convenient resolution for higher land-use efficiency.
Multiple case-studies of different structural systems include descriptions and explanations of relevant characteristics for covering or bridging over heritage sites. It focuses on their optimization as precondition of sustainability and then followed by discussion which includes: desirable aesthetic values, requirements regarding “design for all” for new public space and other characteristics relevant for sustainable urban/metropolitan/megacity development.

Lecture @ Sustainable construction, from traditions to innovations - Acoustics and Sustainability
The basics of applied Acoustics, including general features of interaction between sound waves and materials, will be presented. The absorption and reflection properties of materials will be examined, since they are the principal phenomena affecting acoustic fields in closed spaces (reverberant fields). Transmission will be also discussed, in order to highlight the capacity of materials of reducing environmental noise and improving the sustainability of constructions. The most important physical parameters that are suggested by literature and regulation will be listed, highlighting the range of application of each of them.
The practical applications of these concepts to real life problems and buildings will be presented, together with a field measurement in the campus of Riga.

Lecture @ Sustainable Construction – Natural radioactivity and innovative materials from radioactive products
To avoid the use of toxic building materials is one of the principles of sustainable construction. Building materials, currently used in residential buildings, can be, naturally, a source of toxic emissions dangerous for human health as those one related to Radon. Moreover, the depletion of energy resources and raw materials stimulated the reuse of residues containing enhanced concentrations of natural radionuclides (NORM) in tailor-made building materials in the construction sector. For this reason, when using those materials, it is crucial to consider the impact on building occupants’ health in terms of exposure and indoor air quality.
Lecture deals with the basic principles on natural radioactivity, the effects on human health and the evaluation of gamma and alpha doses due to natural radioactivity of building materials.

Lecture @ Sustainable Construction – The basics on Radon management in built environments
Sustainability includes strategies to improve human health and wellbeing in work and living environments providing structured and integrated safety solutions through the identification of all the potential hazards in the workplaces and buildings. Exposure to the radioactive gas Radon, which can accumulate into confined spaces, represents a hazard for human health. The long exposure to it, in fact, is associate to an increase of lung cancer onset.
The lecture deals with the identification of buildings and environments susceptible to the Radon risk and gives basic principles about the best strategies to manage the Radon risk into buildings.

Workshop @ Sustainable Construction – Workshop at the Knauf Academy Training Center
We will introduce with sustainable employment of natural resources on the basis on Knauf’s production. It will be possible to follow the process from the extraction of gypsum stone to the construction product, and from the construction product to the system. Respectively, from EPD (Environment Product Declaration) to ESD (Environment System Declaration).
The practical part will take place at the Knauf Academy Training Center, where a possibility of practicing/building the CUBO 3D with 3D building performance according to the BIM principles will be provided.

Workshop @ Sustainable Construction – The Visit of the Latvian Wood Construction Cluster
Visit will give an overview of different aspects of wood construction industry in Latvia. We will be visiting CLT factory, wooden modular house factory as well as the Forest and Wood Products Research and Development Institute. Factories will give a clear picture of what the everyday business is like for different players in the game of wood construction, in addition to that we will take a glimpse at what the scientific and testing work is like. If we are lucky, we will get to see people who burn things for living.

Workshop @ Sustainable Construction – The Visit Around Riga Technical University Campus
The visit around Riga Technical University campus will give an overview of different aspects of construction industry in Latvia. We will be visiting six fully reconstructed and newly built buildings as well as one construction site, where the reconstruction of the existing university building will take place.
The buildings will provide insight in Latvian construction practice as well as of incorporation of sustainable construction solutions such as wooden panels of external delimiting constructions and energy efficient solutions in construction design.
