Students of all Latvian universities are offered a unique experience – to participate in the first TEDx Riga Technical University event held in situ on 20 October and enjoy inspiring stories of outstanding scientists, entrepreneurs, innovators and startupers, experts in technology, seafaring, medicine and other fields from Latvia and other countries.

The event will be held on-site at RTU Domus Auditorialis, Ķipsala, Zunda Embankment 8, and online on RTU Facebook and YouTube channels.
Students from various fields will primarily be invited to attend the event in person. In order to participate in the event on-ste and gain a direct TED experience, they will have to confirm their interest and motivation by filling out the application form on https://tedxrtu.lv/

The event will be held in English.

The main theme of TEDx Riga Technical University will be change as an integral part of everyday life, which, forcing continuous change and adaptation, develops society and its individuals as strong leaders of change management.

Eleven outstanding speakers will share their inspiring and memorable stories during the event, e.g., the RTU Vice-Rector for Research, Professor Tālis Juhna, scientific lecturer from the Rotterdam Business School in the Netherlands Niek Ploegman, who has replaced his business career by an academic environment. N. Ploegman will offer to think where a good education originates, and technology startuper Artūrs Bernovskis will consider whether to study while doing something or study prior to starting it. Member of the Board of the pharmacy company Repharm Jānis Vanags will look at crises and errors as moving forces for transformation and a new strategy, whereas an investor and expert in real estate issues Ralfs Gaubšteins will assure that at times not to obtain what you wish is a real blessing.

The floor at the TEDx Riga Technical University stage will also be given to Linda Saulīte, Member of the Board of the communication planning, market and public opinion research, data processing and digital marketing company Dentsu Latvia, who, emphasising that each of us is different, will invite to think whether this is the reason why we feel our uniqueness. Director of the Innovation and Technology Department of the Investment and Development Agency of Latvia (LIAA) Ņikita Kazakevičs will guide through the unknown by using improvisation, humour and mental exercises, whereas co-founder of Longenesis, the leading medical technology company in the Baltic States, Emīls Sjundjukovs will invite to look at digital tools as ‘a screwdriver of the 21st century’ that helps to create the future of healthcare. The presentation of researcher from the RTU Centre of High Energy Physics and Accelerator Technologies Kristaps Paļskis is also related to healthcare – he will familiarise with a cocktail of biology, physics and technologies or the role of radiation on the path of cancer treatment in the future.

Further on, Dean of RTU Faculty Engineering Economics and Management, Professor Elīna Gaile-Sarkane will reflect on what is better – fear or fearlessness, whereas a seafaring expert, Captain Gints Ādams will tell how to control the ever-changing world.

TEDx Riga Technical University is organized by the Institute of Business Engineering and Management of the Faculty of Engineering Economics and Management (FEEM) of RTU. This is the first time in the history of Latvia that an educational institution has obtained a license to hold a TEDx event.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TED Talks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)

About TED
TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading, usually in the form of short, powerful talks (18 minutes or fewer) delivered by today's leading thinkers and doers. Many of these talks are given at TED's annual conference in Vancouver, British Columbia, and made available, free, on TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Sal Khan and Daniel Kahneman.

TED's open and free initiatives for spreading ideas include TED.com, where new TED Talk videos are posted daily; the TED Translators Program, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as translations from thousands of volunteers worldwide; the educational initiative TED-Ed; the annual million-dollar TED Prize, which funds exceptional individuals with a «wish» or idea, to create change in the world; TEDx, which provides licenses to thousands of individuals and groups who host local, self-organized TED-style events around the world; and the TED Fellows program, which selects innovators from around the globe to amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities.
