Riga Technical University (RTU) has increased its position in the GreenMetric World University Rankings and has become the 50th greenest university in the world. RTU is still the only Latvian higher education institution that is rated so high, because no other Latvian and Baltic higher education institution has been able to rank among the 400 greenest universities.

The world’s higher education institutions are ranked by GreenMetric for their commitment to reducing environmental impact. The compliance of higher education institutions with the green principles has been assessed according to six criteria – common infrastructure, energy efficiency and climate change mitigation activities, waste management, efficient use of water resources, transport infrastructure and environmental education and science.

RTU has achieved the highest results in the categories of transport infrastructure, environmental education and science, efficient use of water resources and waste management.

RTU has been consistently implementing a sustainable policy for several years, and sustainability issues have also been raised at the level of RTU strategic development, including the principles of sustainability and the UN 17 Sustainable Development Goals in RTU Development Strategy 2021–2025.

RTU has also made an ambitious strategic decision to achieve climate neutrality by 2030, ensuring that in 2030 RTU activities will produce very little or no carbon emissions. «To facilitate this activity, RTU has joined the UN Climate Change Initiative «Race to Zero» and the Climate Ambition Alliance, which already includes 624 universities worldwide», says RTU Director of Administration Juris Iljins.

RTU is switching to electric transport, implementing the concept «Green Ķīpsala» in Ķīpsala campus, managing sustainable resources, enhancing the understanding of RTU staff and students about environmental issues and promoting the development and deployment of environmentally friendly technologies using green technologies created by RTU researchers in the campus infrastructure.

According to the GreenMetric ranking, Wageningen University and Research in the Netherlands is ranked first, followed by the University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom and the University of Groningen in the Netherlands.

From Latvia, the ranking also includes the University of Liepaja and Rezekne Academy of Technologies that are ranked 450th and 764th, respectively.
