Riga Technical University (RTU) has improved its position in the prestigious international rating «QS World University Rankings by Subject 2022» and ranked among 301–350 world’s best universities in power engineering and electronics, climbing in the ranking compared to the previous year. In general, RTU ranks 340th in engineering and it is the only university in this position not only in Latvia, but also in the Baltics.
The performance of higher education institutions is assessed in five sectors: engineering and technology, arts and humanities, life sciences and medicine, natural sciences, as well as social and management sciences.
In turn, specific areas are assessed in more detail within these sectors. The best result in this respect has been achieved in power engineering and electronics, with RTU ranking among 301–350 world’s best universities. In mechanical engineering, aeronautics and manufacturing RTU occupies a place of 401–450, in business and management – a place of 451–500, and in computer science and information technology – a place of 551 – 600.
With this performance, RTU has won the highest position in engineering and technology in the Baltics, reaching 340th place, while Vilnius Gediminas Technical University ranks second in the Baltics with its 356th place. These higher education institutions are followed by Tallinn University of Technology (TalTech), the University of Tartu and Kaunas University of Technology.

The universities are ranked by their academic reputation, reputation among employers, citation and the h-index. Academic reputation and reputation among employers are based on extensive international surveys, citation is measured by the average number of publications revealing the impact and quality of university research, while the h-index takes into account the citation rates of the most cited publications and other publications, thus analysing productivity and impact of university researchers.
In total, 1543 universities of the world have been ranked in various sectors in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2022.
