If you are planning your Erasmus stay in Latvia, gain knowledge of Latvian language and culture by taking the intensive Latvian language course, part of the European Lifelong Learning Programme!

Latvian is the official state language of the Republic of Latvia. There are about 1.4 million native Latvian speakers in Latvia and about 150,000 abroad. Latvian belongs to the Eastern Baltic sub-group of the Baltic Language group in the Indo-European language family.

The Intensive Latvian Language Course organised by the International and Public Relations Department of Riga Technical University and held in Riga from 1 to August 27, 2011 is mainly intended for Erasmus students who are planning to come to Latvia within Erasmus programme for a semester or one year studies at universities during the academic year 2011/2012.

The course is based on interactive didactic units in which lexical and grammatical elements are combined. The purpose of the course is to give sufficient basic skills of spoken and written Latvian, knowledge for everyday communication and ability to understand and comprehend simple text, as well as to get familiar with the Latvian culture.

By the end of the language training course students will understand and speak a varying amount of the Latvian language studied within each of the following competencies: interpersonal, relationship, emotions, clothing, family, food, money, shopping, weather, telephone, time, and transport, getting around the city, hobbies, living, studies and work.

The course is based on the books «Sveiki, Latvijā!» (authors: M. Gustovska, I. Vimba) and «Palīgā» 1st level (authors: I. Budvike, B. Šilina, R. Vizule).

Methodologies in language sessions include, but are not limited to: backward build-up, information’s-gaps, dialogues, repetitions, drills, role-play, games, and songs.

Teaching is carried out in a small group of maximum 15 learners.

Timetable:
Monday to Friday 9.00–12.30 and 14.00–15.30 and independent homework.

Total amount of classes: 120 lessons (3 times 90 minutes a day).

In addition to the language training, the Intensive Latvian Language Course provides lectures on Latvian history, politics, economy and culture. Participants also have the opportunity to visit museums, art galleries and other interesting places. An attractive leisure programme, tours and parties will be organised.

Testing methods:
There will be a test to verify the reached level every week. Final test consists of four subtests: reading, listening and writing and an interview. Upon successful completion of the course each student will receive a Certificate of Further Education of Riga Technical University and 6 ECTS credits.
