High Performance Computing Center

Riga Technical University (RTU) High Performance Computing (HPC) Centre is a unit under the supervision of the Office of Vice-Rector for Research. It aims at providing support to application of e-science technology in research:

  • access to modern computing infrastructure (supercomputer, data storage facilities);
  • access to European e-infrastructures;
  • technical support in transferring computing problems to HPC;
  • scientific software for research and studies;
  • training and seminars.

HPC Centre was established in June 2012 as a follow up to computing activities initiated by the project BalticGrid (2005‒2010) within the Sixth and Seventh EU Framework Programmes. Since then the Centre has accumulated experience in supporting wide range of engineering applications at RTU and providing services also to other research institutions in Latvia.

High performance computing (HPC) allows solving complicated computing problems in a short period of time. Computing is carried out on high-performance computers (shared-memory mainframe, computing cluster) made up by many parallel processors. A modern HPC is an essential element of any contemporary university, and it is used for various purposes ranging from solving engineering problems in MATLAB environment to big data analysis and machine learning.

HPC system “Rudens” technical parameters

  • Architecture: InfiniBand cluster based on x86 and graphical processors;
  • Number of cores: 744 (CPU), 25728 (CUDA);
  • Memory: up to 128 GB per process, 2.6 TB total;
  • Performance: 35 TFLOPS;
  • Data storage: 238 TB, parallel architecture.
