AUGUST 13-22, 2018
Currently, Latvia is not recognized globally as the country of biological resources; however, Latvia is unique because it is one of the few countries in the world, where more than half of the territory is covered by human-untouched ecosystems: forests, lakes, rivers, wetlands, grasslands and coastal areas. It is often believed that economic growth and conservation and preservation of nature are not compatible things, but we are showing the opposite, developing Latvian biotechonomy. Biotechonomy or bioeconomy is a sector focused on the sustainable use of biological resources and products of high added value.
Participants of summer school will get to know Latvia, its culture and history through valuable natural resources and its usage, creating higher added value. Processing of resources and production of innovative products are essential to get and use knowledge in the practice about cleaner production, environmental technologies, energy efficiency, waste management and other aspects, to use resources effective and reduce negative impact on environment. Participants of summer school will get both theoretically knowledge and will work practically in the groups, using materials from the nature of Latvia (basically wood and forest residues). There will be five workgroups for practical task, where participants will develop new product prototypes and concepts in the fields like these: design objects, toys, building materials, thermal insulation materials and porous materials for increase of surface area. Practically working, participants of summer school will get more understanding about usage of resources from the nature of Latvia and those value.
Participants of summer school will get knowledge and experience working with senior researchers and using modern study methods and creative study environment. Participants of summer school will find out Latvian culture, history and uniqueness and will see the image of Latvia like the power of bioresources, learning achievements in the sustainable use of biological resources and creating innovations.
