During the CMS week in Bangkok the CERN Baltic Group (CBG) chairman, prof. Toms Torims, presented the current status of the successful regional collaboration of Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania to the CMS Collaboration Board.

Importantly, the CBG members are going to contribute some 1.4M Euros to the so-called Phase II upgrade of the CMS experiment. The Collaboration Board, the highest decision making body of CMS, was informed by Prof. Torims about the CBG’s policy to aim for in-kind contributions via national industries and research entities, instead of direct cash payments for the coverage of the Phase II upgrade fees of the experiment. For instance, one such in-kind contribution option explored at this time is the manufacturing and validation of the electronics boards, which could be done jointly among the Baltic States.

The presentation was well received by the CMS Collaboration Board and the CBG was congratulated on the impressive progress achieved in this collaboration of Baltic scientific institutes – the CERN Baltic Group is going strong!
