The exhibition «CERN – Accelerating Science» will take place in the National Library of Latvia (NLL) from May 12 to June 4 and introduce the residents of Latvia with the activities and scientific achievements of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). The official opening ceremony of the exhibition will take place on Monday, May 14, at 4.30 pm, with the participation of the Prime Minister Māris Kučinskis, the Minister of Education and Science Kārlis Šadurskis, as well as the management of RTU and CERN. Before the official opening of the exhibition, at 3.30 pm, anyone interested will be able to attend a public lecture in English held by the CERN representative.
At the exhibition, visitors will be able to take five steps towards the unknown, by seeking answers to the question of how the universe originated and learning about fundamental physics research conducted by the CERN. In the first step, it will be possible to investigate the Big Bang, in the second step one will be able to visit the area of particles and matter, the third step will reveal the secrets of the universe, in the fourth – to get acquainted with the Large Hadron Collider and in the fifth step to find out where in our everyday life we can see scientific discoveries.
Student groups are particularly welcomed to the exhibition, for a free guided tour to explore the CERN – an exclusive high-energy particle physics research centre, a place where globally significant discoveries are made. Fundamentals of particle physics will be explained to the students and they will see a demonstration of how the world’s greatest scientists are trying to discover still unknown particles and gain a deeper understanding of the origins of the universe.
In January of this year, the government of Latvia decided to start the process of accession to the CERN in order for Latvia to become a fully-fledged member of CERN in a few years, therefore it is important for the residents of Latvia to get acquainted with work, scientific achievements and discoveries of the CERN, as well as what Latvian scientists and entrepreneurs, as well as country as a whole will get from joining the CERN.
The participation in the CERN will open up new opportunities for Latvian scientists to conduct research in the stronghold of the world’s physicists, participate in CERN science projects and cooperate with other countries, while doctoral students will have an opportunity to develop their doctoral thesis at the CERN. Entrepreneurs will be able to qualify for CERN orders, because in order to conduct scientific work, various technological equipment that Latvian companies can supply to the CERN is needed.
Already for 60 years, the CERN has been the leading nuclear research centre of the world. It has made the most advanced discoveries that affected global development. At the CERN, the Internet was invented and six years ago using the Large Hadron Collider the Higgs boson was discovered.
The exhibition «CERN – Accelerating Science» is organized by the Ministry of Education and Science in cooperation with RTU. The exhibition will be open at NLL every workday from 9 am until 8 pm and from 10 am until 5 pm on weekends.
