On 11.-12. October RTU scientists Prof. Toms Torims, Kalvis Kravalis and Guntis Pikurs participated at kick-off meeting for RTU leaded project: «Development of hybrid electron accelerator system for the treatment of marine diesel exhaust gases». Meeting took place at Institute of Nuclear Chemistry and Technology located in Warsaw.  This project aims to use innovative particle accelerator technology usage for ship diesel exhaust gas treatment to meet new ecological regulations.

The idea is to process marine diesel flue gasses with electron beam to allow effective NOx, SOx and particular matter collection from exhaust. Project is an ARIES project (ARIES is a Horizon 2020 project meant to promote particle accelerator use for societal applications) proof of concept project call winner and enjoys full CERN support. As partners for ships exhaust gas treatment are  Institute of Nuclear Chemistry and Technology - INCT, European Organization for Nuclear Research - CERN, Fraunhofer Institute for Organic Electronics, University of Huddersfield UH, ebeam Technologies Europe – ebeam, Remontowa Marine Design – Remontowa, Milgravja Tehnoloģiskais Parks - Riga Ship Yard - RKB, BIOPOLINEX Sp. z o.o. Partners agreed on the next steps at the project implementation and are starting active work on implementation of project activities.
