«Fly safe and fly far!» said the President of Latvia Egils Levits to Riga Technical University graduates at the grand graduation. His wish corresponded to the unusual graduation site, Spilve airfield, where this year, under the conditions of social distancing due to corona virus, RTU Grand Drive-in Graduation took place.
«I see here the new innovators, the creators and implementers of new ideas, all of whom, together with all the citizens of Latvia, with all Europeans, will form a modern Europe, a modern Latvia,» the President of Latvia said, stating that the idea of drive-in graduation is also innovative, «and this shows that there is a really great potential for our nation.»
The President also particularly congratulated RTU foreign students, wishing that they remember their study time in Latvia with good memories of Riga, RTU and fellow students, and not lose this link in the future.
Meanwhile, RTU Rector Leonīds Ribickis acknowledged in his speech that – even though we celebrate our great day in a different way, but excitement remains. He expressed gratification that RTU has managed to adapt to the new circumstances and «also this year we have been able to meet, celebrate and see how many and how strong we are.» The Rector thanked families and relatives for supporting graduates on their way to the diploma, as well as the academic staff and other employees of RTU who helped to prepare the new specialists.
On the evening of graduation at Spilve airfield, on July 24, more than 1,000 graduates received RTU Bachelor, Master and Doctoral diplomas. They were also congratulated by the Minister for Education and Science, Ilga Šuplinska, representative of the Board of RTU Alumni Association, Enno Ence, while the musical greetings were provided by the band «Dagamba» and a special musical surprise from Inbox.lv – Intars Busulis and «Abonementa orķestris». The graduation was supported also by «Latvenergo», «Skonto Group», «Industry Service Partner», «Tet» and «Fiqsy».
RTU had chosen the drive-in format so that graduates, after several months spent in the virtual environment, at least during the graduation, while in the car, could feel togetherness.
The event was organised by RTU Alumni Association and this was already the fourth grand graduation when all RTU graduates received diplomas at the same time.
