The defence industry hackathon returns to Latvia

December 9–11, 2022 defence industry hackathon «Defence Makeathon Riga 2022» will be held on the new premises of the Riga Technical University (RTU) Science and Innovation Centre, enabling various professionals to develop functioning prototypes of security and defence solutions. The hackathon aims to build an ecosystem that would foster the development of new defence technologies and solutions in the long run.

At the hackathon, any idea with a military application can be developed, but the main focus of the hackathon will remain on the five following directions:

  • development of unmanned systems;
  • armament;
  • maintenance of combat equipment;
  • individual equipment systems and components of soldiers;
  • cyber security, as well as information and communication technologies.

Defence and information and communication technology experts, product designers, artists, architects, UI/UX designers, electronics and mechanical engineers, three-dimensional printing experts, team leaders, marketing specialists, entrepreneurs, and other enthusiasts are invited to participate in the hackathon. Due to security requirements binding on the defence industry, citizens of the Republic of Latvia, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, the European Union, or the European Economic Area are allowed to participate in the hackathon «Defence Makeathon Riga 2022». All applications will be carefully reviewed and evaluated, and the event's organizing committee will confirm their compliance with the hackathon's requirements.

Registration for participation in the hackathon is open until November 30.

Employees of the Latvian defence sector (e.g., those in the service of the Latvian National Armed Forces (NBS), as well as those employed in the Ministry of Defence and its subordinate institutions) are required to register separately for participation in the event by sending an application email to .

The hackathon is organized by the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Latvia and the National Armed Forces in cooperation with RTU Science and Innovation Centre. For the development of solutions, RTU Science and Innovation Centre will provide premises, raw materials, workstations, special industrial prototyping/production equipment, as well as the presence of advisors and experts in cooperation with partners. Authors of the best ideas will be competing for prizes.

RTU Science and Innovation Centre has extensive experience organizing innovation and business support events in various fields, from climate neutrality to space technologies. The first hackathon of this type dedicated to the defence industry took place at the beginning of 2020.
