Evaluating the performance of Riga Technical University (RTU) in implementing the cooperation program of the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 17, RTU is ranked among the 201-200 world universities that are most successful in achieving sustainability goals. RTU work in promoting sustainable innovation and combating climate change has been highly evaluated and RTU achieved the highest results compared to other Latvian universities, according to the latest data of The Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2021.

RTU efforts to achieve Goal 13 – take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts - are highly valued. RTU is ranked 64th in this position. In turn, evaluating Goal 9 – build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation - RTU is ranked 82nd in the world. No other Latvian higher education institution has been evaluated so high in these two criteria.

The work of RTU in achieving other UN goals has been highly evaluated as well. For instance, in pursuing Goal 8 – promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment, and decent work for all - RTU is ranked 101-200 in the world. Meanwhile, RTU is ranked 201-300 in implementation of three goals, namely: Goal 7 - ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all, Goal 11 - make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable, and Goal 12 - ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns.

This year 1115 universities from 94 countries were evaluated in the ranking. The University of Manchester, United Kingdom,  is ranked first in the ranking, the University of Sydney - second, and the RMIT University - third, both located in Australia.

Sustainable development is one of RTU priorities, which is transformed into a variety of actions, such as the creation of the concept of Green Ķīpsala in 2018, with a strong focus on sustainable, smart and environmentally friendly development. The aim of the university is to raise awareness among students, employees and the public about the need to reduce the ecological footprint and to promote the creation and use of environmentally friendly technologies. Efforts to bring these goals to life are reflected in RTU assessment in The Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2021.

In pursuing sustainable development goals, RTU is engaged and actively participates in major international cooperation organisations, such as Sustainable Development Solutions Network and other.
