RTU maintains leading position in Latvia in the prestigious QS World University Rankings by Subject

Riga Technical University (RTU) has improved its position in the prestigious international ranking QS World University Rankings by Subject 2021 and ranked among 201-220 best universities in architecture, as well as experienced an increase in engineering and technology, reaching the range of 401450 best universities in the world. Overall, the performance of RTU has been evaluated in six fields of study. RTU has demonstrated the best results in Latvia.

The performance of higher education institutions is evaluated in five subject areas – engineering and technology, arts and humanities, life sciences and medicine, natural sciences, as well as social sciences and management.

«Engineering and technology is the strongest field of RTU,» assessed in the rating. RTU has received 61.6 out of possible 100 points in this field. No other higher university in Latvia has been evaluated in this field. 

This year RTU has been first time evaluated in the following subjects: architecture, computer science and information technology, business and management. In architecture RTU has been ranked in the 201 to 220 range, whereas in business and management – in the 451 to 500 range, and in computer science and information technology – in the 501 to 550 range. In turn, in energy and electronics, as well as mechanics and aeronautics RTU has been ranked in the 401 to 450 range.

«This year we are particularly pleased with the international recognition of RTU Faculty of Architecture, which is ranked among 220 best schools in the world in the group of elite architecture schools. We are also proud of the success of RTU Faculty of Engineering Economics and Management and RTU Riga Business School, ranked among the 500 most powerful in the field. According to QS ranking RTU has shown the highest results in Latvia in engineering, architecture, IT and business management in comparison to other universities. The success of RTU enhances not only our but all of Latvia’s higher education prestige, that strengthens Latvia’s position on the world higher education map,» emphasizes Juris Iljins, RTU Director of Administration.

The universities are assessed taking into consideration Academic reputation, Employer Reputation, Citations per Paper and Hirsch index. The assessment of Academic Reputation and Employer Reputation is based on extensive international surveys, citation is measured by the average number of publications that reveal the impact and quality of university research, while the Hirsch index assesses the most cited publications and citation indicators of other publications, thus analysing the productivity and impact of university scientists.  

A total of 1440 world universities have been evaluated in various subject areas.
