The first foreign alumni meeting will take place on 7–8 July at Riga Technical University (RTU). The event is organised in honour of the 155th anniversary of RTU and the 25th anniversary of RTU Foreign Students Department. Its aim is to bring together former RTU foreign students in order to form the basis for the international network of foreign alumni and their future activities.

Director of RTU Foreign Students Department, Professor Igors Tipāns emphasises, “From the moment of its foundation, RTU is an international university. In 25 years since the Foreign Students Department has started its work, several hundred foreign alumni who work successfully on all continents have graduated from RTU. The successful professional career of foreign students attests high quality of RTU study programmes, our students’ ability to compete in the global labour market. It's not just about studying and professional growth – the youthful years spent in Riga, the exciting study life of our former students have created warm feelings toward Latvia for a lifetime; our foreign alumni are really friends of Latvia, Riga and RTU”. 

The alumni meeting will start on 7 July, at 10 am, 1 Kronvalda Boulevard, Room 212, and it will be declared open by RTU Rector, Academician Leonīds Ribickis. The meeting will also be attended by the Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs, Professor Uldis Sukovskis, Director of the Institute of Heat, Gas and Water Technology of RTU Faculty of Civil Engineering, Professor Egīls Dzelzītis, as well as Professor Igors Tipāns and Head of RTU Alumni Association Anita Straujuma. 

The formal part of the event will be followed by an informal one, during which alumni will be able to meet former fellow students and academic staff members, as well as visit places where their studies and extracurricular activities took place – RTU campus in Ķīpsala, Kaļķu Street 1 and elsewhere.

In recent years, the number of RTU foreign students has increased sharply, reaching 2,056 in 2016, of which 1,263 were full-time students, and 793 – exchange students. In the academic year 2016/2017, 195 foreign students graduated from RTU: 110 Master’s degree students and 85 Bachelor’s degree students.
