The Design Factory (DF) of Riga Technical University (RTU) announces the application for a new study course «Vertically Integrated Project», within which interdisciplinary student teams under the guidance of researchers will develop some challenging long-term research projects. The new course will start in February and will be implemented in cooperation with researchers of the Georgia Institute of Technology (the USA) and RTU.

At the beginning of the study course, interdisciplinary student teams will be created, each consisting of students majoring in at least three different specialisations starting with 1st-year students and ending with Doctoral students. Within the framework of the course, students under the guidance of RTU researchers will take part in the research activities, combining theory with practice, work with students majoring in other specialisations and gain experience in research, teamwork and project management. The study course is registered as an elective course. Upon successful completion of the study course, 2 credit points (3 ECTS) are allocated.

Application is announced in the following areas of research:

  • Robotic application in agriculture (under supervision of Agris Ņikitenko, Associate Professor of the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology);
  • Bulk synthesis of nanomaterials (under supervision of Jānis Ločs, Leading Researcher of the Faculty of Materials Science and Applied Chemistry);
  • Sensor network for smart cities (under supervision of Jurģis Poriņš, Professor of the Faculty of Electronics and Telecommunications);
  • Smart clothing for future applications (under supervision of Aleksejs Kataševs, Professor of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Transport and Aeronautics);
  • High-frequency transformers in industrial electronics (under supervision of Pēteris Apse-Apsītis, Associate Professor of the Faculty of Power and Electrical Engineering).

However, those students who are ready to develop new products, have an opportunity to apply for two projects implemented by the Design Factory in cooperation with entrepreneurs. During the semester, they can strive to «invent new LEGO» or make a revolution in new added-value product development or develop a new table that could change the man’s view on the ergonomic opportunities of the furniture. Not only RTU students but also students of other higher education institutions can apply for these projects.
