In early April, Riga Technical University (RTU) has joined the Latvian Startup Association, thus becoming the first and the only higher education institution to join this organisation. The Latvian Startup Association aims at developing the ecosystem of Latvian startups, enhancing the movement of startups in Latvia and all over the world, representing their interests, as well as fostering mutual respect and promoting cooperation among startups.
RTU Vice-Rector for Research, Professor Tālis Juhna says, «The association is an important initiative for promoting the startup support system. Riga Technical University has set commercialisation of ideas or valorisation as a priority area; therefore, it is only natural that we have joined the Latvian Startup Association – it attests our interest, opportunities and the role in the startup development. Active involvement in the activities of the Association will allow not only successfully achieving our ambitions – to become a science and technology startup centre in Latvia – but also developing the innovation ecosystem and providing support to other members of the Association.»
The Latvian Startup Association was officially launched on 9 March 2016. The current members’ list includes the first RTU startup «Conelum» that deals with the detection of unwanted microorganisms in food.
The Association also comprises a startup pioneer in Latvia and data visualisation solution company Infogr.am, UAV manufacturer Airdog, Latvian startup incubator TechHub Riga, single school survey system Edurio, the former Minister of Economics of the Republic of Latvia Daniels Pavļuts, Regional Manager of the European Investment Fund Krišjānis Zariņš and many other startups, organisations and individuals.
