The faculty is the successor of the Riga Polytechnicum Department of Mechanical Engineering, established in 1864. The faculty has also integrated several structural units of the Faculty of Appliances and Automation, the Institute of Railway Transport, the Mechanical Engineering Faculty and the Faculty of Radio Engineering and Computer Systems of the fromer Riga Aviation University. Today FTME is one of the biggest faculties at RTU. People, who would like to undertake their studies at FTME, are offered a wide choice of study programmes and specializations that suit their abilities and interests. FTME integrates:
FTME students are offered studies in engineering, mechanical engineering and machine building, engineering design, construction of mechanisms and appliances, mechatronics, studies focused on automotive vehicle technology, transport systems and transportation logistics, railway transportation technology organization, technical maintenance of aircraft in mechanical engineering and avionics, transportation vehicle maintenance and repair, studies of engineering and physics, heat-power engineering and heat engineering, and total quality management. Depending on the acquired specialization, FTME graduates are capable of developing innovative technologies and testing methods for manufacturing of various mechanisms, instruments, and appliances, and carrying research of the materials that are used in these products. They know how to organize and manage commercial activity, operation of railway and air traffic, transport systems and technical support operations. They are able to perform technical service and maintenance of road transport and ensure operation and service, repair and manage the quality of physical diagnostics and medical treatment technologies. They develop, design and use computer-assisted medical engineering technologies and equipment. They know how to process metal and ensure the operation of heat-generation and consumption systems. They have the necessary competence to advise manufacturers, service providers, engineers, economists and operators of transport systems, as well as staff of medical care and educational establishments on quality control, management and many other specific issues falling within their sphere of competence. Specialists prepared by FTME are demanded by establishments dealing with the design and research of technical appliances and mechanisms, passenger and freight transportation and logistics companies, forwarding companies, enterprises dealing with service and maintenance of road transport vehicles, traffic safety organizations, professional schools, metal working, machine building, woodworking, foodstuff manufacturing, transportation and other industrial enterprises. They work in medical care institutions, thermal power plants, cogeneration stations and enterprises dealing with the design and manufacturing of heat supply systems. Each of the study sub-disciplines represented by FTME is an essential and indispensable element for further stabilization and development of the economy of Latvia. Contacts
